Martinelli Studios

Martinelli Studios President and Founder Bill Martinelli loves to work. If he's busy, he's happy. His early experiences are a foundation for many of the skills he uses today. By age thirteen he was constructing holiday displays for San Francisco institutions including Crocker Bank, the St. Francis Hotel, and the TransAmerica building. Bill remarks, "I learned to create illusion and design in three dimensions, and became used to long hours and odd schedules – perfect training for serving our clients."

Speed is another theme in his life. He used to race cars and boats; he was a member of a two-man drag boat team that held three world speed records for eleven years. He continues to be a motor sports fan and rarely misses a televised car race. He enjoys his profession, "because of the short time frames for many of our assignments. A job comes in, we do it, it's often out the door the same day and we move on to something new."

Bill's training in the visual arts comes from many sources including the College of San Mateo as well as numerous professional workshops and seminars. Bill comments, "My professional associations have also been very important to me. The opportunities to learn from other photographers, artists and technicians has helped me tremendously over the years."

Bill gives back to his profession. He is Past President of the Professional Photographers of the Greater Bay Area (PPGBA) and is a founder of the association's Golden Gate School of Photography. His has been a member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), an international association of 13,000 members, since the 1970's and has lectured extensively at PPA events. He earned the Master of Photography degree in the shortest time possible, three and one half years and has also achieved Certified Professional Photographer, Master of Electronic Imaging, Master Artist, and Photographic Craftsman status from PPA. In 1989, Bill was elected to PPA's Board of Directors and served as the association's President for 1995-96.

In 1994, Bill expanded Martinelli Studios to add full digital capabilities. Bill comments, "This technology hasn't just changed the way we work, it's changed the work itself. This is a whole new creative venue for us to explore, experiment, and better serve our customers."

A third generation native San Franciscan, Martinelli grew up in the city's Marina district. Bill is a certified NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) and PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) Divemaster.

Bill's honors include:
Images accepted into PPA's permanent Loan Collection
